Eighteenth-year old cellist Zlatomir Fung is the first prize winner at the 2016 George Enescu International Cello Competition, the 2015 Johansen International Competition for Young String Players, the 2014 Stulberg International String Competition, and the 2014 Irving Klein International Competition. Zlatomir was selected as a 2016 Presidential Scholar for the Arts and was awarded the 2016 New England Conservatory Preparatory School's Frances B. Lanier Award.
He is a regular member of the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players for their 2016-2017 season. Zlatomir placed second in the cello division of the 2013 International Brahms Competition, and in 2012 was the silver medalist of the cello division of the Seventh International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. He has appeared on NPR’s radio show From the Top six times, as well as on Performance Today.
He was also the winner of the 2014 Aspen Music Festival Lower Strings Concerto Competition, 2014 Boston Symphony Concerto Competition, the Harvard Musical Association High School Achievement Awards Prize, NEC Prep School Concerto Competition, the Walden Chamber Players, New England Philharmonic, and Music Worcester Competitions. He has been a soloist with the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Cruz Symphony, the Boston Pops, the Lausanne Sinfonietta, the Grand Rapids Symphony, and the New England Philharmonic, among others.
Zlatomir has studied at Ravinia's Steans Music Institute, the Kronberg Cello Masterclasses, the Heifetz International Music Institute, MusicAlp, and the Aspen Music Festival and School. He is a student of Richard Aaron. His teachers have included Julie Albers, Emmanuel Feldman, and Nancy Hair.
Outside of music, Zlatomir enjoys philosophy, cinema, and plays chess competitively. He lives in Westborough, MA and was homeschooled through the Oak Meadow School in Vermont. He will be studying in The Juilliard School this coming fall with Richard Aaron and Timothy Eddy. Zlatomir is a proud recipient of Kovner Fellowship Program.
